As the firm’s design principal, E.J. oversees project design and direction. He practices with the aspiration that buildings can inform us about place and landscape. Believing that the best architecture is a response to site and time, he draws from experience that includes American Studies and philosophy at Colby College, years of building and decades of travel and outdoor adventure.

After graduating from Colby, E.J. worked as a carpenter in New England, learning traditional building methods and finish carpentry. Inspired by a summer studio at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, E.J. studied architecture at the University of Washington in Seattle. He earned his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Colorado in 1991 where he was the recipient of the Alpha Ro Chi Medal for leadership and service, and received the Emerging Impressions Award from the AIA.

As part of his practice, E.J. was a senior instructor at the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Colorado from 1993-2005. He is still involved in the academic community, regularly participating as an invited design critic at CU and design programs around the country. E.J. has presented the work of Arch11 at several universities, lectured at the Denver Art Museum and is a frequent jury member for national and international design awards. His work is published globally in a variety of academic and professional journals. Under his direction, Arch11 has earned dozens of AIA awards including firm of the year from Colorado’s North Chapter in 2009.

All the while, he maintains an obsessive interest in the meaningful detailing of buildings.

E.J. Meade is a registered architect in the State of Colorado and an active member of the American Institute of Architects.
